Never Good Enough

When we share our faith with unbelievers there is something that often offends them. They get the feeling that we believe they are not good enough. And of course, they are not good enough to enter the Kingdom of God. But neither are we. Our attitude MUST NOT be one of superiority. None of us are ever good enough for heaven until we have the righteousness of Christ.

Isaiah 64:6: But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

2 Corinthians 5:21: For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

It is helpful to acknowledge early on in a conversation with an unbeliever that we ourselves are sinners and that only the grace of God could get US to heaven. I have had a measure of success in that by quoting Romans 3:23: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; I tell them that I know that I am a sinner and then ask them if they believe that they are.

It is also helpful to quote Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. We can further identify with them by expressing the truth that the wages that I have earned by my sin is the Lake of Fire. Then I should tell them that God has given me the undeserved gift of eternal life (heaven).

They should understand that I am not good enough, they are not good enough and that NO ONE is good enough for heaven. And then they must understand that heaven is a gift and that our being good enough for heaven is also a gift. The ONLY way we can be good enough is for the goodness to be a gift.

Ephesians 2:8: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Then they need to know that even though salvation is a gift, it is a gift that will change them. The gift will make them good enough. The gift is the only thing that CAN make them good enough.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
